We knew it was just a matter of time. YouTube is creating YouTube Gaming to compete directly with Twitch.Tv. My first realization came from the YouTube job postings back in January 2015. Google was looking for engineers and product specialists for a YouTube gaming initiative. Now the product has been officially announced.
Not much is know about YouTube Gaming yet. A Blogger post by Product Manager, Alan Joyce stated the following:
“This summer, we’ll launch YouTube Gaming, a brand new app and website to keep you connected to the games, players, and culture that matter to you, with videos, live streams, and the biggest community of gamers on the web—all in one place.”
It seems that it is going to be an extension of YouTube, like Vevo for music on YouTube, that will encompass the existing uploaded game content and provide live streaming.
The Blogger post says there will be more information about YouTube Gaming at E3 next week. I am expecting to see YouTube Gaming integrated into some of the consoles because there are job positions at YouTube looking for API and console engineers.
Opinion: This can be a serious blow to Twitch.Tv because when a streamer exports their Twitch streams the only place to currently export them is to YouTube. We will keep you updated as more information is available.
